Here’s a great travel debate. Should travel advisors need a license?

As the travel industry continues to grow, a heated debate has emerged among its leaders: should travel advisors be required to hold a professional license to sell travel? Picture yourself embarking on a dream vacation, only to discover that your travel advisor lacks the expertise to ensure a seamless journey. Can that be? No, it cannot, many will say. Yes, it can. Others will also say—kicking up the dust of a nightmare.

A nightmare that has stirred up a clash of perspectives among industry insiders, with some promoting the need for licensing and others vehemently opposing it.

In a recent live debate at ASTA’s 2024 Premium Business Summit, two influential leaders in the travel industry went head-to-head on this contentious issue.

Eric Maryanov, President of All-Travel, argued passionately in favor of licensing, citing its potential to enhance consumer trust, ensure competence, and curb fraud.

On the opposing side, Chris Dane, President and Managing Partner of Hickory Global Partners, countered that a licensing mandate would impose burdensome constraints on travel advisors. What’s at stake in this debate? And how might the outcome impact your next travel adventure?

Is it the case for licensing or the case against licensing? What would be your verdict if you were the jury?
