The resignation of George mayor Charles Standers over claims that the Democratic Alliance (DA) is racist proves the “blue lie of unity it has tried to sell to black‚ coloured and Indian communities”.

That’s how the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) reacted to news that Stander had tendered his resignation on Wednesday night in a letter to provincial DA bosses.
“Racism is the DA's DNA. There is not a single racist incident that has occurred in the past few months that is not associated with the far right party that is a bastion of racism‚" said Sanco spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu.
“The rented leadership that is leaving the party in droves confirms the dominance of the racist white inner cycle and the DA's puppet masters cannot sustain the blue lie of unity it has tried to sell to black‚ coloured and Indian communities.”

Standers had said in his letter that: “Racist practices within the DA George caucus are wrong‚ create disunity and affect service delivery to our people.”
Mahlangu said this showed “the DA bubble is bursting despite attempts to project itself as a united party”.
Mahlangu didn’t‚ however‚ comment on the ongoing disciplinary action against Standers that saw him being suspended from attending meetings following remarks critical of the party that he made in a George community newspaper.
This prompted DA sources to question the "suspicious" timing of Standers' resignation.
Standers faced disciplinary action earlier this year when his wife accused him of assault. She later withdrew criminal charges against him.
