What should you do if your tire bursts in the middle of the road?

Since my experience over the weekend, I have not really been myself. I got to work this Tuesday morning about 15 minutes late. I stepped into the office and greeted my colleagues with a big grin on my face. Everybody was in a cheerful mode. Upon reaching my desk, I carelessly dropped into my seat and reluctantly got myself ready for work in minutes.
My first thought was to continue work on the company website but, instantly something else crossed my mind and that was the near-fatal accident that happened in front of me at the Gbagada Expressway while strolling with a friend on Saturday precisely 6:55 PM. It was a rather disturbing and pathetic scenario. So immediately I decided to share it on this post.
So what transpired?
We were heading towards the Pedestrian Bridge at Charlie Boy Bust-Stop, Gbagada, having a conversation with a friend.

Typically of the ever busy Gbagada express road, fleets of cars were speeding past us with a near ear deafening roaring sound from their engines. One of them, a Honda Civic 2016 model, driven by a woman in her late forties got unlucky. She sped past us and got one of the front tires torn to shreds by a dangerous gallop/porthole that other cars managed to avoid. It happened right in front of us, so when the tire got ripped apart and the wheel almost ran away, it was as if the poor Honda was about to tumble.

But luckily for them, after some time, the car managed to slow down to a halt and was almost hit by a yellow commercial bus that followed it. This woman driver due to shock or just sheer stupidity refused to wheel the car out of the highway for over 10 minutes. She just sat there inside the car with the passengers probably confused and arguing, while facing the possibility of being mauled down by trailers or other vehicles that were using the same lane as them at high speed. As a matter of fact, a small Kia Picanto had to swerve sharply in order to avoid hitting them. Other cars had to honk continuously for her to leave the road as they pass. By this time it was almost dark.
So I walked towards her and greeted, then humbly advised her to pull over properly out of the road towards were she and her passengers will be safe but she declined, saying “No thank you, we are fine” she was probably thinking I am a bad person with bad intentions, so I muttered “I hope so” and left. By this time the four women passengers slowly alighted. I must confess it was very disturbing seeing them on the road like that.  She did not think about using a C-caution if she intended to leave the car in the middle of the road that long. Not safe at all.
What should you do if you see yourself in such situation?
  1. Keep calm and cool: When your tire bursts, don’t panic. This will worsen the situation. This means controlling yourself or the emotions that rush through you in the form of excitement – fear.
  2. Control your vehicle: Once you are calm, the next thing is to control your wheel with all you have. Combine experience, calculation with sharp decision making into it. And you will be safe.
  3. Run for Safety: This is very important. The road is built for moving vehicles and not a static one. So in the event were your vehicle loses control and eventually becomes static in the middle of the road, the first thing for you to do is to find a way to leave the road. Pull over where you and your vehicle will be safe and figure out the problem with your vehicle. Thanks.
