A special envoy from Morocco met Friday with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and told him Morocco wants to rejoin the African Union, without any preconditions, 32 years after its departure over a territory dispute.
Morocco is the only African country that is not a member of the AU.
The territory issue is over the area of Western Sahara, which Morocco claims and the AU recognizes as an independent state. Morocco withdrew in 1984 when the AU made the decision to recognize Western Sahara.
Diplomats from Morocco and other nations have been holding meetings with one another in recent weeks to discuss the matter of Morocco rejoining the union. The AU holds a summit in Rwanda's capital, Kigali, on Sunday and Monday, where a decision could be announced.
