Asamoah Gyan and Dede Ayew |
It’s clear Dede wants the armband from Gyan who know is not yet ready to relinquish the title ahead of the 2017 AFCON finals.
In an interview Ghanaian radio station Happy FM Gyan was quizzed about the issue, he said:
“I was named as the captain of Black Stars when it reached my turn, so people should wait until my reign is over.
“If God doesn’t make you a king and you crown yourself king, your reign will be fruitless”.
Ayew was named vice-captain in 2015 and has led Ghana in the absence of Gyan.
With 48 goals in 95 caps, Gyan is the all-time top scorer and most capped Black Star although he is yet to guide the four-time African Champions to any major silverware.
But the Swansea midfielder has refuted claims that he is desperate to take over from a man who is mentoring him for the armband.
“I’m not in a hurry to become Black Stars captain. I’m the deputy and have always supported Asamoah Gyan.
“He is grooming me to take over the Black Stars captaincy in future so until he retires [I’m still his deputy],” Ayew said on Starr FM.
He also commended former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah for his leadership skills in improving the Black Stars.
“They are both good leaders in their ways. They have different ways of leading the team.
“Stephen was a good leader, and Asamoah is also great. They both have the ambition of improving the team, and we are thankful to them.”
Ayew has managed 11 goals in 67 caps and is the son of former Black Stars captain and African legend Abedi Pele.
